“The Day No Got Corrected in 20 Minutes”

There are moments in life when no feels less like an answer and more like a slammed door—loud, rude, and right in your face. But if life has taught me anything, it’s this: give it time, give it to God, and then watch Him work on your behalf in ways you couldn’t have orchestrated if you tried.

Recently, my youngest daughter Faith—my long-term-vision, goal-mapping, plan-having child—was on the brink of one of her biggest dreams coming to life. She had worked hard, followed every rule, climbed through all the right hoops… and then wham. She got the dreaded no.

When she told me, my heart absolutely dropped for her. I said all the right comforting mama things, but sometimes words feel too small for the size of the disappointment.

And then Faith said something that made me pause: “Mom… why does everything I desire seem like I have to fight twice as hard for it?”

I looked at her and said, “Honey, because your name calls you into your destiny every single time it’s spoken. Your name alone compels you to stand firm in the middle of hard things.”

Her name is not casual. It’s prophetic. And let me tell you—God meant every letter of it.

But words weren’t enough that day. That mama-bear instinct kicked in, so I did what any determined mama bear with a paralegal degree would do:

I rolled up my sleeves and got to researching. And sure enough, I found some things that had been overlooked—things important enough to challenge that “no.”

We sat down, drafted an email (the kind that could make a grown administrator sit up straight), and sent it.

Twenty minutes later—twenty minutes!—we received a message overflowing with excitement: “Yes!” Just like that. The same door that shut in her face swung wide open like it had been waiting all along.

And it made me realize something:

We are often too quick to accept a no as final. Sometimes a “no” just means someone didn’t look closely enough. Sometimes a “no” means try again, but this time with clarity. Sometimes a “no” is simply the setup for God to show off.

Because as Scripture reminds us: “For all the promises of God in Him are yes, and in Him Amen.” — 2 Corinthians 1:20

God doesn’t tease us with hope—He fulfills it.
