“Healing? Oh Baby, I Booked the Appointment.”
One of the kindest things I ever did for myself was go to therapy.
Now let me be honest—my first therapist probably wanted to switch comfy chairs with me once I started sharing. I walked in with a full carry-on, a checked bag, and a couple of emotional suitcases I didn’t even know I’d packed. Bless his heart.
Therapy, to me, feels like taking a long, slow walk down memory lane. Except this time, instead of just waving at the pretty moments and politely ignoring the potholes, you stop, take a good look, and say, “Oh… so that’s why I do that thing.”
It’s strolling past every stored memory—good, bad, and the ones you swore you’d never bring up again—to see how all of it shaped the person staring back at you in the mirror.
Some people I know don’t believe in the empowerment of therapy.
They’ll say things like,
“Just pray about it,”
or “Therapy is for people who can’t handle life.”
Honey, let me tell you something: I prayed…and then I made the appointment. Faith and therapy are not enemies. Sometimes God sends the help already sitting in the waiting room.
And once I began unpacking that overstuffed suitcase of memories? Whew.
It felt like someone was cutting years’ worth of tight rubber bands that had been strapped around my heart, my mind, and my habits.
I learned to recognize certain attitudes that triggered old emotions.
I learned to stop inviting people into my life who didn’t value me.
Most importantly, I learned how to love without also inviting the chaos.
Therapy was liberating.
Life-changing.
Freedom in a co-pay.
If you grew up thinking seeking professional help was taboo—something to hide, something to whisper about, something only “other people” do—then you might spend your whole life tied up in knots made from other people’s opinions. Trying to muddle through life with emotional duct tape and deep breaths alone is exhausting.
Therapy gives clarity.
It gives peace.
It gives you you back.
And if no one ever told you that you deserve that kind of healing—
Consider this your sign.
Scripture : “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” — John 8:32
(And sometimes that truth comes out while you’re sitting on a therapist’s loveseat clutching a box of tissues… but freedom is freedom!)
Mama Wisdom- “Baby, healing don’t always come dressed in church clothes — sometimes it shows up in a therapist’s office with a clipboard and a soft voice. Don’t you ever be ashamed of getting the help that makes your soul lighter and your mind quieter. Peace is too expensive to buy on clearance.”
